Today we had our first visit from the dog trainer. Now it's not that I have really bad dogs by any means. They are actually super friendly and LOVE people. They are a little, ahem, misguided. Abby jumps up on people trying to fill the strong desire of licking their faces raw. They both pull really bad on their leashes, which makes walking them and Yoyo in the stroller more of a challenge and a chore than an enjoyment. And due to an unfortunate situation a couple years ago where Cassy was attacked by a large dog while we were out for a walk, Abby is really aggressive toward other dogs and Cassy is super fearful. But all that was tolerable for the most part. The kicker was when they both started to "correct" Yoyo when he was bugging them. It was just a little growl here or there but I was worried if/when it went further. I would hate myself if Yoyo ever got bitten by one of the dogs and then of course the dogs would have to go. Soooo, I came across an in-home dog training company and made the call. And ironically they were much calmer than usual when she came to the door and when we sat at the table they both laid down at our feet and for the most part we hardly knew they were there. Anyway she ended up working with me for almost 5 hours and I've already seen some major improvements from the pups...which is good, cuz it sure as heck wasn't cheap!

Good! Maybe I won't get slobbered to death by you know who when I come to visit, LOL.
Glad you're seeing improvement already.
Aw, cute pups. Glad to hear they're making some improvements. Sometimes we watch those dog trainer shows and they always make so much sense it makes us wonder how we didn't already know all that stuff!
Hello Ricki - since you live in the Edmonton area now, I thought I'd send this to you. If you know of other families who may be interested in this group, please forward the information on to them. Thanks so much, Jody
I’ve created a new Meetup goup called Central Alberta Adoptive Families with Children of African Heritage (CAAFCAH) and it can be found at http://www.meetup.com/CAAFCAH - CAAFCAG is a group of adoptive families looking to spend time together, being able to learn from each other and to have the ability to connect their children through activities and events. – This is open to all Alberta families, but most events will happen in Cental Alberta (in and around Red Deer to Edmonton).
Please join up and let others know as this is an easy and conveniant way to let everyone know about events that will take place.
Two events to take place in the near future:
Mom’ s Night Out
Thursday, June 24, 2010
7:30 pm – 9 pm ish
Kavaccino’s Coffee Shop
5028 - 51 Street
Lacombe, AB T4L 1W2 Canada
This open to all moms who are thinking of adopting, are in the process or have adopted from Africa.
Family Beach Day
Saturday, July 17th (Rained out day will be August 21st)
11 am – 6 pm (or whenever you show up until you want to go home)
Ebeling Day Use Area, Aspen Beach, Gull Lake
Hwy 12 (20 kms west of Hwy 2/QE2)
Gull Lake, Alberta
We will be set up close to the playground. Look for balloons. I will reserve a fire pit for those who’d like to roast hot dogs. Please take all of the things you will need for a day at the beach. This is not a potluck. This is a relaxed day where we can get to know each other and have fun together. If you need better directions or more information, please contact Jody at 403-782-9705 or djvriend@telusplanet.net
Hope to see you there.
Since we're trying to make Ricki as busy as possible (heehee) - there is also a Summer Camp in July (3 days) here in Calgary that Yonas would love. Nesh is going and the only stipulation is that the younger kids (<3yrs) need to have a parent there for diapers (if need be) and just a bit of help if they don't have the attention span. If you want the info, send me an email at mgogowich@gmail.com and I can pass it along.....anyone else who's interested, let me know as well and I'd be happy to forward it!
Cheers,
M
