You're not THAT big!

Often when we are out in public people approach us, interact with Yonas, and ask me how old he is. When I tell them, I almost always get the same response "wow, he's a big boy for his age" or some variation of that. So, yesterday I plotted his measurements and he really isn't that big for his age. For height he's only in the 30th percentile and for weight he's in the 60th. He still wears size 12-18 month pants (size 24 month shirts) and his feet are only a size 5. So I don't really get why everyone thinks he's so big?!?! Maybe it's the mature manner in which he carries himself when we are out.

I once ran into a lady that had two kids she adopted from Ethiopia and she insisted TD was much older than his actual age. INSISTED she knew better than us. I found it very insulting. As for the average street person saying TD looks big, he is, he is now 85th for height (he was only 50th in September), but he is skinny, only 40th. But I think the reason people say it is that our little ones have been through a lot and it does show in their faces. Most kids TDs age have little hair, big round baby fat bodies and generally are much more baby like. Our little ones have been through a lot and it does mature them faster than other children. At least that is my thought. Either way, he is super duper cute, no matter his size! :)

We always get the opposite -- "Oh, she's so TINY!" -- when she's at the 50th or 55th for height and weight. So I don't think people have a sweet clue, myself. Yeah, she's probably going to be tall and skinny (especially if she grows into those feet and hands - YIKES!) but for now, she's gone from below the charts to the 50th percentile, and that's good enough for me.

We get the same thing too! People always comment on how huge moses is, when actually according to our doctor he is and has always been in the 50th percentile. I think people forget!

And that expression on his face is priceless. Oh my gosh, he is SO cute.

Just came across your blog, and I'm so happy you are back! Yonas is SO sweet :)
Not to discourage you, but Mulu is 5, and I still get that comment all the time "he's SO big for his age" (even though he is average height in his class).

For a while there we also got a lot of comments from people saying our son looks big for his age, even though he's only about 60th percentile. I couldn't figure that out until someone said, well actually, it's not really how big he is, but rather how mature he looks in his face.
